JSR Center of Materials Innovation

This is a project to build a new research building for JSR Corporation, which operates petrochemical and fine chemicals businesses. With a primary focus on creating new businesses, the research building was required to enable close collaboration among the five research divisions. Rather than organizing the space for each department, multiple departments were consolidated on the same floor in accordance with the research workflow, and the floor configuration was flexible to allow for the sharing of information and knowledge between departments. Adjacent to the staircase, which serves as the main flow line to each floor, is a skip-floor style “edge” that serves as an R&D support space for communication and collaboration, as well as a space to focus on purposeful tasks.
